Donation act for the Sinai Bible signed by
the Council of Mt Sinai Cairo Metochion and Archbishop Callistratus
on 11 and 17 September /Old style/ 1868 respectively

Σήμερον, ἑνδεκάτην τοῦ μηνὸς Σεπτεμβρίου, τοῦ 1868-ου ἔτους, συνελθοῦσα ἡ Ἱερὰ τῶν πατέρων Σύναξις τῆς Βασιλικῆς Μονῆς τοῦ ἁγίου καὶ θεοβαδίστου Ὄρους Σινᾶ εἰς ἔκτακτον συνεδρίασιν ὑπὸ τὴν προεδρείαν τοῦ ἁγίου Δικαίου, ἀρχιμανδρίτου Κυρίλλου, συνεσκέψατο τάδε. Ἐπειδὴ καὶ ἐν παντοίοις καιροῖς ἡ κραταιὰ καί ἁγία Ῥωσσία, κυρίως δὲ καὶ ἰδίᾳ ὁ Μεγαλειότατος καὶ Κραταιότατος Αὐτοκράτωρ πασῶν τῶν Ῥωσσιῶν Ἀλέξανδρος Β´, ὁ μέγας καὶ κλεινὸς οὗτος προστάτης τῆς Ὀρθοδοξίας καὶ ἰδίᾳ τοῦ Σινᾶ, οὐ διέλιπε χορηγῶν ἀείποτε τὴν κραταιὰν αὐτοῦ ἀρωγὴν καὶ ἀντίληψιν ὑπὲρ τοῦ γεραροῦ τούτου ἐν Σινᾷ σκηνώματος, ὅπερ ἄνευ τῆς κραταιᾶς ταύτης βοηθείας οὐδέποτε ἠδύνατο διασωθῆναι, πιεζόμενου ὑπὸ μυρίων πειρασμῶν καὶ θλίψεων ἐν μέσῳ ἀχανοῦς ἐρήμου καὶ βαρβάρων, Ἐπειδὴ καὶ αὖθις ἐν τοῖς ὑστάτοις τούτοις καιροῖς διὰ τῆς κραταιᾶς τῆς ἁγίας Ῥωσσίας προστασίας ἡ τά πάνδεινα παθοῦσα καί ναυάγιον οἰκτρόν ἀπειλήσασα Βασιλικὴ Ἱερὰ αὕτη Μονὴ διεσώθη ἀπὸ παντελοῦς ἀπωλείας, Διὰ ταῦτα Ἡμεῖς ὑποφαινόμενοι, ὅ τε ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Σιναίου Ὄρους Καλλίστρατος καὶ λοιπὴ Ἱερὰ τῶν Πατέρων Σύναξις, δεόμενοι νυχθημερόν πρὸς Κύριον, ὅπως ἐπὶ μήκιστον διατηρῇ τήν τε Α.Α. Μεγαλειότητα σὺν παντὶ τῷ Αὐτοκρατορικῷ οἴκῳ καὶ τὴν ἁγίαν αὐτοῦ Βασιλείαν καὶ δωρῆται αὐτῷ κράτος καί νίκην κατὰ παντὸς ὁρατοῦ καὶ αὀράτου ἐχθροῦ, ἐξ ἄλλου δ᾽ἐφιέμενοι, ὅπως ἐπὶ μᾶλλον καταφανῆ καταστήσωμεν τὴν ἡμετέραν εὐγνωμοσύνην καὶ πιστὴν ἀφοσίωσιν πρός τε τήν Α.Α. Μεγαλειότητα καὶ τὴν Ἁγίαν Ῥωσσίαν, ἀποφασίζομεν τάδε· Ἄρθρον μοναδικὸν. Λαβόντες ὑπ᾽ὄψιν καὶ τὰς προτέρας ἐπί τούτου τῆς Μονῆς ἀπο- [fol.  39v] φάσεις, δωροῦμεν, πρὸς ἔνδειξιν τῆς ἡμετέρας εὐγνωμοσύνης ἐπὶ ταῖς τοσαύταις καί τηλικαύταις εὐεργεσίαις, τῇ Α.Α. Μεγαλειότητι, τῷ Αὐτοκράτορι πασῶν τῶν Ῥωσσιῶν Ἀλεξάνδρῳ Β´, τὸ πρεσβυγενὲς καὶ ἱερὸν τῆς νέας διαθήκης χειρόγραφον τῆς Μονῆς τοῦ Ὄρους Σινᾶ, τό χειρόγραφον δὲ τοῦτο λογισθήσεται ἀπὸ τοῦδε τελεία καί ἀναφαίρετος τῆς Α. Αὐτοκρατορικῆς Μεγαλειότητος ἰδιοκτησία. Πρὸς πίστωσιν οὖν καὶ ἀσφάλειαν ναὶ μὴν καὶ ἀΐδιον τῆς ἀληθείας ἔνδειξιν ἐγένετο καὶ κατεχωρήθη ἐν τῷ Ἱερῷ τῆς Μονῆς Κώδηκι τὸ παρὸν ἐπίσημον καὶ ἱεροσφράγιστον Πρακτικόν, ὑπογραφὲν παρ᾽ἁπάντων τῶν τῆς Ἱερᾶς Συνάξεως μελῶν. Ὅμοιον δέ τῷ ἐν τῷ Κώδηκι, σεσημασμένον τῇ μεγάλῃ τῆς Μονῆς σφραγίδι καὶ τὰς αὐτὰς πρωτοτύπους ὑπογραφὰς φέρον, ἀφοῦ ἐπικυρωθῇ, ὑπογραφῇ καὶ σφραγισθῇ καὶ παρὰ τοῦ Σεβασμιωτάτου Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Σιναίου Ὄρους, ἡμῶν δὲ Ποιμενάρχου καὶ Προέδρου, Κυρίου Καλλιστράτου, προσωρινῶς ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις διατρίβοντος, πεμφθήσεται πρὸς τὸν Μεγαλειότατον καὶ Θεοδόξαστον Αὐτοκράτορα πασῶν τῶν Ῥωσσιῶν Ἀλέξανδρον Β´, πρὸς διηνεκῆ μὲν ἔνδειξιν τῆς δωρεᾶς, τεκμήριον δέ τῆς πρὸς τὴν Α. Μεγαλειότητα καὶ τὴν ἁγίαν Ῥωσσίαν πιστῆς ἀφοσιώσεως ἁπαξαπάντων τῶν Σιναϊτῶν. Ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ κατὰ Κάϊρον Σιναϊτικῷ τῆς Τζουβανίας Καθιδρύματι. Ἡ Ἱερὰ τῶν πατέρων Σύναξις δικαῖος ἀρχιμανδρίτης Κύριλλος Σιναΐτης, Ἀρχιμανδρίτης Νεόφυτος Σιναΐτης, Ἀρχιμανδρίτης Ζαχαρίας Σιναΐτης, Ἀρχιμανδρίτης Πορφύριος Σιναΐτης, Πρωτοσύγκελλος Κορνήλιος Σιναΐτης, Πρωτοσύγκελλος Ἄνθιμος Σιναΐτης, Πρωτοσύγγελλος Θεοδόσιος Σιναΐτης, Σκευοφύλαξ Μακάριος [fol. 43r] Ἡμεῖς, ὑπογεγραμμένος Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Σιναίου Ὄρους Καλλίστρατος, ἐγκρίνοντες πληρέστατα τὴν τε δωρεὰν καὶ τὸ πρακτικὸν τόδε, ἐπιβεβαιοῦμεν καὶ ἐπικυροῦμεν τοῦτο τῇ ἰδίᾳ ἀρχιεπισκοπικῇ Ἡμῶν σφραγίδι. Ἐν τῇ ἁγίᾳ πόλει Ἱερουσαλὴμ, ᾳωξη Σεπτεμβρίου ιζ ´ + ὁ Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Σιναίου Καλλίστρατος ἐγκρίνει καὶ ἐπιβεβαιοῖ

(Authorized copy from the Monastery's Sacred Book of Acts) This 11 September 1868, the Holy Council of the Imperial Monastery on the Sacred God-trodden Mount Sinai, discussed, in an extraordinary meeting chaired by dikaios Archimandrite Cyril, the following. Since at all times the supreme and holy power of Russia, and particularly the greatest and mightiest Sovereign of All Russia, Alexander II, the great defender of the Orthodox Church and Mt Sinai in particular, have invariably given every possible support and encouragement to this reverend Sinai community which otherwise could not withstand the pressure of thousands temptations and sorrows to survive in the endless desert among the barbarians, Since of late years this holy Imperial Monastery, enduring horrible disasters and risking lamentable fall, has been saved from utter ruin, The undersigned, Callistratus Archbishop of Mount Sinai, and the rest of the holy council of fathers, praying day and night that God may protect His Majesty the Emperor, His Royal Family, and His holy Kingdom, granting Him power and triumph over every visible and invisible enemy, and wishing, on the other hand, to prove our gratitude and faithful loyalty to His Majesty the Emperor and the Holy Russia, decree Only item. Considering previous community decisions, and in token of our gratitude for the manifold benefactions, give His Majesty the Emperor of All Russia Alexander II the ancient and sacred New Testament manuscript of Sinai Community, as His Majesty the Emperor's complete and inalienable property from now on. In witness, warranty and everlasting proof of truth we make and enter in the Sacred Book of Community Acts this formalized and sealed document signed by all members of the Holy Council. The copy of the entry, attested by applying the Great Community Seal and signed by the same persons, will be attested, signed and sealed by Very Worshipful Archbishop of Mt Sinai, our pastor and principal, father Callistratus ad interim in Jerusalem, and dispatched to the great and glorious Emperor of All Russia Alexander II in everlasting witness of our gift, and in testimony of the real devotion of all Mt Sinai brethren to His Majesty the Emperor and Holy Russia.
