[fol. 135r] Monsieur le Sénateur, Votre Excellence voudra bien se souvenir que javais exprimé, dans le temps, lespoir dobtenir la donation définitive du manuscrit de la Bible de Sinaï moyennant une somme bien inférieure à celle qui avait été primitivement assignée à cet effet par le Gouvernement Impérial. Mes espérances nont point été déçues. Déjà au mois de Septembre de lannée dernière, en me restituant le reçu conditionnel qui avait été délivré en 1859 par le Prince Lobanow, larchevêque de Sinaï, afin denlever tout pretexte à la malveillance, minformait en même temps que depuis le moment où le manuscrit a été remis au Professeur Tischendorff, la communauté de Sinaï avait résolu den faire hommage à Sa Majesté lEmpereur. Si dès [fol. 135v] lors je navais pas considéré laffaire comme définitivement arrangée, cest que voulant éviter les contestations et les protestations isolées qui pouvaient surgir dans lavenir et être exploitées par la presse hellénique, javais tenu avant tout à mettre le Gouvernement Impérial en possession dun acte signé par toute la communauté qui constaterait labandon du manuscrit. Jai profité de mon récent voyage en Egypte pour arriver à ce but et je me fais un devoir de transmettre ci-près en original et en traduction lacte collectif dûment signé qui ma été envoyé par Mgr Callistrate. Ce document vient clore une négociation entamée depuis dix ans et qui reçoit ainsi une solution qui satisfera, jaime à lespérer, le Gouvernement Impérial. Quantà larchevêque et aux Pères du couvent de Sinaï, ils mont exprimé à plusieurs reprises leurs remerciments pour la conclusion [fol. 136r] dun arrangement qui les mettra en possession des neuf mille roubles qui leur sont destinés et qui se trouvent déposés à notre Consulat Général en Egypte. Jai prescris à Mr de Lex de délivrer contre reçu la somme en question, sur laquelle 2 m. roubles seront remis au couvent du Mont Thabor. Dear Mr. Senator, Your Excellency will kindly recollect that I have cherished hopes to negotiate the Bible donation with a far lesser sum than initially assigned by the Imperial Government. My hopes were not vain. Last year in September, the Archbishop of Sinai returned to me the letter of guarantee issued by Prince Lobanov in 1859 and, to prevent intrigues, informed me that since the date of passing the manuscript to Professor Tischendorf, Sinai brethren had resolved to give it as a gift to His Majesty the Emperor. At that time I did not consider the matter as final because, wishing to avoid potential protests and claims which could be exploited by the Greek press, I intended above all to obtain a document for the Imperial Government, signed by the whole of the community in witness of the abandonment of the manuscript. With this aim in mind I took advantage of my recent trip to Egypt and now must enclose here the original text and translation of duly signed collective statement sent to me by Archbishop Callistratus. The document finalizes decade-long negotiations and thus provides the solution hopefully welcomed by the Imperial Government. Both the Archbishop and brethren of Mt Sinai repeatedly thanked me for completing the case bringing them nine thousand rubles assigned to them and kept at our Consulate General in Egypt. I instructed Mr Lex to have them sign for the sum, of which 2 thousand rubles are to be contributed to Mt Tabor Community.
