Tetraevangelion. Early 17th cent.
O (137 õ 91). 310 leaves.
Paper. Ink, cinnabar, colours, gold.
It is written in a semi-uncial hand.
The illumination of the manuscript includes four miniatures ñ Evangelist portraits (fols. 7v, 84v, 138v, 227v). There are head-pieces and initials in the New Byzantine style (fols. 8r, 85r, 139r, 228r). The book contains also painted pictures showing Matthew the Evangelist (fol. 7r) and John the Theologian with pupil St Prokhor (fol. 228r). Fol. 1v has the glued-on miniature of the Vision of Seven Stars and Seven Lamps.
The codex originally did not contain miniatures and was embellished only with fine head-pieces and initial letters in the New Byzantine style, executed, however, in different ways. This proves that various models were used while decorating the book. The decoration of the Gospel is remarkable for pictures of symbols of the Evangelists serving as the top elements in the composition of the head-pieces. The incription records that the manuscript was donated by Deacon Ivan Vasiliev to the Trinity-St Sergius Lavra.
The manuscript came into the Imperial Public Library with the A. A. Titov's collection in the early 20 century.
