Ex Libris for F.Sedenko-Vityazev by Sergei Chekhonin
The splendid graphic artist Sergei Chekhonin started his art career with bookplates, created in the spirit of members of the World of Art. His early works are masterly stylizations, complexly composed and characterized by variety of ornamental elements, rich vegetal patterns based on flowers and herbs. Bookplates for F.Sedenko-Vityazev and E.Gollerbah, similar in composition to Dmitri Mitrokhin's works, are harmonious and expressive.

Ex Libris for L.Vychegzhanina by Sergei Chekhonin
Bookplates for L.Vychegzhanina and M.Sokolovskaya represent already a new stage in the artist's professional development. The first of them are laconic; it is notable for its elegance, a delicate balance between light and darkness, and an impeccably strict drawing of lines. The design for the Ex Libris for M.Sokolovskaya is based on refined vegetal motifs, that are easily recognized by "Chekhonin's" flowers and leaves.

Ex Libris for he Museum of the Revolution by Sergei Chekhonin
Sergei Chekhonin finally departed from traditions of the World of Art, when he aligned himself with the avant-garde and began to produce the Soviet attributes. The artist's style changed from chamber into publicistic. A strict geometrical decoration, significant deformations, a dynamic design became typical of the sort of bookplates. The expressive Ex Libris for the Museum of the Revolution combines all these typical features.
It is difficult to overestimate the influence that members the World of Art had on a bookplate. They first raise it to a high level of graphic arts, that was far above average. Free in form, new in style bookplates by artists of the World of Art group rank as the greatest world's achievement of the contemporary graphic arts.
