The Guide «Periodicals on law and economy of Russian Empire 1703-1916»

The Legislative information center has been working on the electronic reference guide Periodicals on law and economy of Russian Empire 1703-1916 (in Russian language) since March 2015. The goal of the project is to make a comprehensive guide covering about a thousand periodical editions. As of February, 2019, the number of editions included in the guide is about 270.

The guide contains bibliographic information about periodicals which were published in pre-revolutionary Russia for more than two centuries starting from the Vedomosti (the Vedomosti was the first Russian newspaper established by Peter the Great) apart from illegal periodicals.

The edition was named periodical if it was published no less than twice a year. The guide is being developed on the base of three major works which are describing the collections of the NLR:

  • “The Russian periodical press 1703-1900”, author and publisher – N.M. Lisovsky,
  • “Bibliography of periodicals of Russia 1901-1916”, author L.N. Belyaeva, methodology by Mezhenko Y.A.,
  • “Newspapers of pre-revolutionary Russia 1703-1917”, author and editor T.V. Akopyan.

The periodicals included in the guide are: official (governmental), territorial, city editions, publications by private persons, scientific publications (heralds of the universities and Academy of sciences), humanities publications (political economy, jurisprudence).

Besides newspapers and journals, there are other kinds of editions included in the guide: almanac, digest, reports of sessions e t. c.

The description of a periodical in the guide consists of the following bibliographic elements: title, subtitle, place of publication, years of publication, publication frequency, content, editor/publisher, supplements, remarks. If there were changes in the edition’s title and content, it is shown in the guide as a row of editions.

Thе periodicals are arranged alphabetically by title.

The guide has two-level structure:

First level - pictures of scanned covers of editions with brief information: title, subtitle, date of foundation or issue, publishing frequency, deposit code in NLR.

Second level – description of a periodical - a table with information about the type of a periodical, content, the publisher, supplements, remarks. In the column “remarks” there is information about variations in title, duration of publication, suspension of publication, links to web-sites about periodicals of pre-revolutionary Russia.

Editor – T. N. Dias, compiled by M. V. Filippova, L.N. Gulyaeva. One of the first compilers was N. A. Nechayeva.
