This collection was originally part of the library set up by the first Russia's scientific society in 1767. The library, still housed in the building of Free Economic Society, came under the same administration as the Public Library in 1920, though forming an entirely separate collection of the Economic and Agricultural Department. After the demise of the branches of the Public Library in 1950, the collection was transfered to the building on the Fontanka Embankment where it is available up to now.
The works of the Free Economic Society are printed both in Russian and foreign languages. They are divided into two following areas: general economic material and local studies collections. The latter includes provincial, municipal, regional publications of statistical committees.
The collection numbers over 263,128 titles.
