The National Library of Russia's holdings of bookplates was formed primarily from several large collections belonging to members of the Leningrad Society of Ex-Librists which existed between 1921 and 1930. Apart from these large collections, the library has all the exhibits from the society's museum, an extensive range including the finest Russian examples and many foreign works of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Russian section of the society's collection numbers 1135 items and consists of heraldic bookplates of the eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries, as well as works by artists belonging to the World of Art association and prominent Leningrad and Moscow designers of the 1920s and 1930s. Foreign section of the society's collection contains 544 works, which are mainly bookplates from the 1900s – 1920s.
